K-ON! episode 4 – Mio x Yui flag triggered!

Ever since Yui grabbed Mio by the hand and indulged in the softness of her fingers, Mio had been confused by the growing pressure in her chest and the shortness of breath she experienced every time Yui would say hello, or brush by her. As they continued to grow closer, practicing for the upcoming school festival, Mio wondered how much more she could bear until her chest burst. During a trip to the beach with the rest of the light music club, Mio and Yui finally got a rare opportune moment alone. Mio, unable to contain herself any longer, finally grabbed Yui by the hand and confessed her love… is not quite the way it happened, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t, eventually.

Clearly, I have no future in writing romance, but it’s a fantasy worth indulging in. 🙂

Welcome to the beach episode. Otherwise known as Mio’s tryhard episode. I kid, I kid, but you have to admit KyoAni was pushing Mio moe like a desperate crack dealer. Examples:

Reluctant Mio will have fun!
Frightened Mio is moe moe.
Moe Maid Mio! Kyun!
No barnacles? *sniff* Hontoni?
My reaction: *blush*

Now, I really do love Mio and I enjoyed watching her scaredy-cat side, so I’m ragging on her, because I love her, but as if enough people weren’t already on the Mio bandwagon, KyoAni had to go and as Nigel Tufnel would say, “Mio’s moe amp goes up to eleven.” (Music meta-references deserve music meta-references. 😉 )

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and…
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most moe goes up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean Mio’s more moe? Is she any more moe?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, Mio’s one more moe, isn’t she? She’s not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be at ten. You’re on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you’re on ten on your moe scale. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don’t know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What Mio does is, if she needs that extra push over the cliff, you know what she does?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One more moe.
Marty DiBergi: Why doesn’t she just make ten more moe and make ten be the top number?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] She goes up to eleven.

Otherwise, when Mio wasn’t spurting moe all over the place, it was your as-expected beach episode. Mio hears a recording of the old K-ON club’s performance, decides they need to practice more, and decides that they need to go on a practice retreat. Luckily for them, Mugi’s got a villa that she’s been dying to share with her friends. The girls get there and nobody – or actually just Yui and Ritsu (who are amusingly on the exact same wavelength) – wants to practice, because there’s a beautiful beach just waiting for them to frolic in. Eventually they do get around to practicing, and Yui shocks the lot of them by laying down some tasty lead guitar licks. Their passion rekindled, they reaffirm their goal to play at Budokan.

While it was another pretty straightforward, enjoyable, light-hearted episode of K-ON! there was one fantastic scene that took it a notch above your standard SOL beach episodes: the scene where Yui is posturing and rocking out while the fireworks go on in the background. The cuts to Mio’s enchanted eyes, Ritsu and Mugi’s content faces, and Yui’s completely ecstatic expression, with the soft, dreamy keyboard music in the background, made what might typically be a normal scene of girls just having some fun, into something that was amusing, heartwarming and inspiring at the same time. You could see everything coming together for everyone at this moment. Their ambition, their inspiration, their passion. Just a great scene. I went back and watched this like 5 times.

And this is why I love Yui the most, because I think only she could’ve pulled off this scene and brought everyone together. Apparently, she’s an idiot savant as well. If the 88 point test score bump wasn’t proof enough, I think her growth from total noob to Van Halen light should seal the deal.

  1. “…pushing Mio moe like a desperate crack dealer.” Lol. Perfect description. When I watched the episode, that bothered me for a while…about twelve seconds.

TP is just refusing to have fun. The fact that no-one is likely to learn guitar that fast is a very weak argument against a comedy like this one. Sure, it’s being overhyped — but only by people who are having such a good time that they can’t help themselves. This isn’t a college course, it’s entertainment.

I felt a bit let down by ep3, and thought the show might be stalling. But certain things in this episode — some of the Mio moe, I admit, as well as Yui and the fireworks, and even Yui being an idiot savant — brought me back into its corner. Not in the first rank of this season’s shows for me, but close.

hashi’s last blog post..Hayami Saori — the new Kawasumi Ayako or the new Shimamoto Sumi?

  2. lol, yeah. Watching K-ON for its realism isn’t the best way to go about it. I doubt that Yui’s virtuoso skills will stick forever. I think we’ll still get to see the group going through some growing pains which should be fun to watch.

  3. To Rabbit Poets
