Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko First Impressions

Possibly the show with the best art of Spring 2011…

You know a character is drawn well when they look good even with pizza topping in their hair

Anyways, having just finished watching the first episode of Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko (Denpa), I’m rather stunned by the level of detail Shaft has put into producing this anime. Everything from the background to the characters, the art was just superb. Not that it was extremely original, but at least Shaft even put the time & effort to focus on minor details such as hair shine or the iris of the eyes.

So if you guys haven’t seen or heard what Denpa is about it’ll be hard to keep on talking about Denpa so I’m going to include an short summary:

“The story revolves around a highschool boy named Niwa Makoto. He lives with his aunt’s family since his parents are away on business. It is there where he meets his mysterious cousin of the same age Touwa Erio — who happens to tie a futon mattress around her upper body and is a self-proclaimed alien. Her staple food is pizza. Erio had been missing for half a year and was found floating in the sea. She doesn’t remember anything about what happened during that period of time, but she began to think that it was the act of an alien and wanders the neighbourhood wrapped in the futon.”                         -Anime News Network

She is DEFINITELY not 39.

So, the premise doesn’t actually appear to be that bad, and it sounds quite original too. With that being said, you ask, what could go wrong in this anime? Well, the main flaw with this anime that has come to my attention is that Denpa is full of “impossibilities” in the story line. First off, have you ever seen a 39 year old that looks like they’re just in their early 20s? I mean, anime makes people look younger and “full of life”, but making a 39 year old look like a university student/ OL just doesn’t cut with me. No matter how good looking they are. Secondly, the main character’s last name does not correlate to his aunt’s last name. You might be thinking: “oh, what if his aunt is from his mother’s side?”. Well you see, the show literally shows a photo of Meme and Makoto’s dad back when they were in high school, so technically they should have the same last name. It’s not like Meme is married either, so…I don’t know what’s going on. Anyways, I could rant on forever about how many loopholes there are in the plot, but I’m sure you get my point.

Leaving the awkwardness presented by the plot behind, Denpa boasts a pretty diverse character list. From your average high school seinen to a strange cousin who thinks shes an alien. Now that’s a mixture you don’t really see in most anime. Despite it just being the first episode, I can already safely say that I’m quite content with the characters as is. All were fairly introduced and given a bit of depth, leaving a memory of them behind in your head as you progress through the show.

As with the voice acting, so far all of the characters seem to have a good accompanying seiyuu, such as Meme’s seiyuu, who gives off an “immature” yet “sexually mature” feel to the character. However, I do feel that Erio’s CV could have had a deeper voice to her…mainly because I think Erio is supposed to be around the same age as Makoto, so I think she sounds a bit too childish. Regardless, definitely some good casting by Shaft.

Lots of things incest & that futon person you saw.

Okay maybe that was a stretch, but there’s certain some sort of incest going on. Certainly it’s not as apparent as the one featured in OreImo, but it’s definitely there. You can obviously see Meme hitting on Makoto and she even goes as far as to call him “Anata”, which is what Japanese wives usually call their husbands by. Tsk tsk… Or, you can look at Makoto’s reaction to his physical contact with Erio. I’m not sure if this incest will continue on, but I usually feel extremely awkward when I get to watch shows with incest in them, so this could be a turn off for me. Anyways, I’m sure there will be people out there who likes this type of stuff.

As far as Denpa goes, it’s more of a light romantic (if there’s more incest or future love interests) comedy than anything else. The comedy in this episode was fairly well moderated, so it wasn’t overly excessive. The quality of the jokes usually produce a chuckle or two out of the audience, so don’t expect to go around laughing your head off. Where the “romantic” aspect of this show comes from, I’m not entirely sure yet. It could be from anyone such as Erio to Meme to some other bishoujo that has yet to be introduced. I’ll be definitely paying attention to that.

This is...ART!

Anyways, if you are looking for a good show to burn your time with, then look no further. Denpa will provide you with (13 X 24 minutes) of enjoyment in the next few weeks to come. Also, if you are looking for a show that mixes gorgeous art with a slightly above average story line, then Denpa is the where it’s at. Although it’s only the first episode, I’m already certain that Denpa is going to be an instant classic with the moe-hunters out there. Especially with the irresistible moeblob, Erio, in the show…right?

Ah well, it’s a shame that I won’t get a chance to blog on Denpa anymore @ Rabbit Poets. I’m sure that if I do keep on blogging about about Denpa, I’ll have a ridiculously fun time taking screenshots and posting on each blog post…

So, all in all, Denpa is going to be really good show…so why not take a look at it fellas?

  1. Was I the only one slightly creeped out by the smiles in this, especially Meme’s?

I rather enjoyed the rest of the art and the story itself is showing some sort of promise but… I swear, I’ll be seeing her smile in my nightmares for many a month to come.

    1. Well I’m not sure how it might’ve of creeped you out, but it creeped me out how a 39 year old looked so young. Then again…could it be because a 39 year old is giving off smiles like a 20-something LB hunter? Well I did notice that during some of the times that I paused to take screenshots, Meme’s facial expressions were rather creepy. Not that it was downright horror movie style, but perhaps it was just animation caught in a bad frame?

You could say that the story is showing some of a promise…but I’m going to say that it’s definitely not the best of the bunch at the moment…so I guess we got to wait and see.

Have fun with Meme’s smiles…hehe…or you can think about how moe Erio is? Would that help?

      1. If Erio proves herself to have more personality than a wet sponge in a prison cell, then she’s already steps ahead of several other moeblobs this year.

And I don’t know why I found Meme’s smile so creepy either. I found her not looking her age a bit disquieting, but something about that smile… I don’t know. It’s bad, man.

      2. Yeah Erio pretty much took the moeblob award from me already so far.

LOL looks like you’re going to have a tough time watching scenes where Meme will smile…which is roughly about …1/3 of the show? hehe

      3. Somehow that’s not too surprising. If anybody should take the award, it’d likely be Erio.

But yeah, so it seems. It reminds me of a Creepypasta I read, except much more terrifying on a more primal “I don’t want to be murdered in my sleep by this person” level. But if I’m just crazy and imagining the fright gleaned from her expression, that’s slightly comforting in an odd way.

  2. LOL Meme she is trying to be so damn moe! But fails at it to me and those creepy smiles hahaha weird! Erio at the end was very cute, if you can stand her that is I have a feeling she will become so damn annoying. Anyway can’t wait to see what happens next! Hopefully she doesn’t need that mattress anymore.

    1. Yeah good point about the mattress…after all, how can we watch a show when such a bishoujo is wrapped up in a futon about 9/10 of the episode?

Meme is trying to be moe…but I guess…given her age….nthx? lol

  3. How was it as a whole? I usually avoid heavily fanserviced series. The art though is really stunning. There’s one more girl from this series I think with brown messy hair and red eyes that I want to devour!

    1. Hey ayama-nee~

It wasn’t bad as a whole, but I definitely would like to point out there is a lack of proper story development and what not. While I enjoyed the ride, I seriously do wonder sometimes “what did I just watch?!”

Yup~ The art is simply fabulous. I don’t think I’ve liked a show’s style this much since, but as I said before, the show is mainly eye candy.

I’d recommend you watch it if you want something funny, pointless, and soft on the eyes. But if you need something more beefy in the “plot” department, then you should probably skip it.

      1. Then perhaps I’ll restrict myself to screenshots and fanarts. Thanks for your opinion.

P.S: Your blog’s headers are adorable 🙂 Keep on going. I hope we’ll meet on another post soon 😉
