Top 10 Female Anime Characters of 2011

As promised, here’s the next part in my three-part 2011 Anime Year in Review series. From the Top 10 Male Anime Characters of 2011 we now move on to the fairer sex, as we count down the Top 10 Female Anime Characters of 2011. As for why I’m promoting this with a Madoka Magica group picture, it’s because no fewer than 3 of these 5 girls made my Top 10 list, and the other 2 could be considered ‘honorable mentions’. To find out which three made it, and precisely where they finished, please read on! 😉 Continue reading “Top 10 Female Anime Characters of 2011”

Hanasaku Iroha 16

I really wanted to write about Hanasaku Iroha 16 and 17 together as it’s a two part episode where both of them go hand and hand, but Doki is having translator issues right now. They only have 16 episodes subbed. And they’re the only sub I want to use. At this point, it seems better just to go ahead and post.

The main problem with episode 16 is there’s not much to say about it. The inn decides to invest in a deal that I don’t understand the business side of where they’ll let the inn be in a film. All the parts of the episode that actually pertained to the movie left me with a nagging feeling that I’d seen this all before.

Hanasaku Iroha 15

While not as bad as last week, storms and losing internet continue to be a problem. And there are more storms tonight.  Lovely.

Episode 15 is an absolute delight. It seeks to wrap up episode 14 of course, but is definitely superior to it’s previous episode. Probably because there was a lot more actual things happening rather then just establishing the setting.

The episode opens with the inn being, as Gorden Ramsey would say, “In the -BBC’s poor bleeping out skills here-. Ohana proves her oddball state by offering to work for them despite being on a vacation. I can’t say I know anyone who would be nearly that selfless. I’d expect more of a Yuina response.

The scene in the souvenir shop where the characters are trying to pick out special gifts for the employees. The gifts really felt as if they fit the employees (and I want Mango Toner).

I feel you Ohana. If I ever find my name in real life, it's always misspelled.

Hanasaku Iroha 13-14

Oh Doki. I love you, but your fansubbing for this show has been sporadic. This time two episodes were release within days of each other, with a promise of subs being released on Monday. This in the end is good news. It took me a bit to get to them as for Fourth of July we had house guests that kept me on my feet. I suppose I got a taste of what the day to day life of Ohana was like. On top of that, we have been enjoying power issues. Nothing like losing power and internet on a semi-regular basis for the past week.

Back to Hanasaku Iroha, episode 13 was an absolute gem, although I struggle to say much about it. It took the plot lines of the family tension between Ohana, her mother, and grandmother, and resolved it perfectly, in a very touching way, with much said in it’s subtly. Not only did it wrap up this arch, it wrapped up issues presented in the first couple episodes. I enjoy how Hanasaku Iroha is able to accomplish a lot of drama without being overly dramatic…most of the time. I also can’t shake the feeling that this show is going to have a really sad ending.

Hanasaku Iroha 11+12

I apologize for this being late. I’m very picky when it comes to fansubs for this show, I only want to watch Doki’s fansubs. I didn’t want to write my episode 11 post as I was sure 12 was going to released any moment, just for Hanasaku Iroha to be late this week. But here we are.

I’m so glad that this show has stopped messing around for now, and seems to be living up to the potential that is promised with the first two episodes. Hanasaku Iroha is now really good. I just don’t know if it should have taken Hanasaku Iroha so long to find it’s groove or if being P.A. Works first 26 episode series, I should cut them a little slack (answer: I won’t).

Hanasaku Iroha 10

I apologize for my absence from blogging Hanasaku Iroha. I’d been busy with preparing for a con. But I’m back to continue the blogging of Hanasaku Iroha.

Through episode 6-9, the show in my opinion has been getting better. Well, episode 6 was kinda a bust, though a bust with cool outfits, but after that the show has been steadily improving. It’s continued with the episodic a story an episode approach, but the series is starting to cover more serious themes. The main problem at this point is they’re still forcing this type of humor into the episodes that isn’t funny. Episode 7, now that was honestly funny, and the humor also served a purpose of developing Tomoe. However when the characters run around being goofy reusing the same jokes over and over just isn’t funny, and is starting to jar with the rest of the series.

There is the semblance of a ongoing story more then just “the day to day adventures of Ohana and gang.” There’s the love triangle between Ohana, Tohru, and Minchi, the health of the grandmother and financial state of the inn being in poor condition, as well as the current theme of growing apart, and overarching theme of figuring out who you are and what your purpose in life is.

Hanasaku Iroha 05

This episode was strange. I had a hard time getting into it because the beginning was so awful, I’d try to watch, give up, try to watch, give up. Yet once I got past the beginning, the episode had moments that actually had the feel of the first and second episode. Yet, when this episode sucked, it really really sucked.

Hanasaku Iroha 04

I’m still enjoying the series, but the charm of the first two episodes appears to be gone. Instead, Hanasaku Iroha seems to going down the path of a typical slice-of-life/drama series, although one with gorgeous art. On the plus side, the story also continues to move forward at a decent rate, helping to keep the whole thing interesting.

Hanasaku Iroha 03

About two fairly heavy episodes, the third installment of Hanasaku Iroha gives us a more light-hearted and typical for the slice of life genre episode. As I really didn’t want to see anything bad of a sexual nature happen to Ohana, and that would have been the other way for things to go, I didn’t mind the way the episode went, even if it was a rather cliched type of episode.

Hanasaku Iroha 02

Within a few minutes, we learn that Ohana’s mom is even more terrible then she seemed in the first episode. Well, not exactly terrible. She’s more of a self-centered and negligent mother who appears to rearrange her life to make room for her daughter’s needs. What she says to her daughter is harsh, and she’s so cheerful as she says it.

Funny thing is, while Ohana’s grandmother may be incredibly strict and cold, I’m sure she’s a lot more reliable then Ohana’s mom. After all, the lady has the discipline needed to keep the inn running, and that includes constant dedication to the job.
